A Teen Odyssey

Local teenagers were invited to embark on an exciting experience to learn about physical theatre and performance using cutting-edge technologies, especially designed for the immersive show, A Teen Odyssey.

What is the show about?

A Teen Odyssey is an immersive theatre experience that blends live physical performance and digital technology to create an unforgettable journey for teenagers and adults. Exploring themes of personal identity, intergenerational connection, and how we find our tribes, the audience joins the performers on a participatory, visually stunning, and sonically captivating adventure.

Central to the experience is the innovative Kalliôpé app, created by Spanish theatre legends La Fura dels Baus - Fundació Èpica, which uses the audience's mobile phones as the catalyst for interaction.

A Teen Odyssey transcends theatrical boundaries, interweaving audience, performers and technology in surprising and unforgettable ways.

By young people for young people: A Teen Odyssey was created with the input of an artistic committee comprised entirely of young people who guided the dramaturgical and aesthetic aspects of the show. This approach to making new works of live performance encourages open discussion, critical thinking and problem-solving, and gives young people context and insight into the various professions that contribute to the production of a stage performance.

La Mecànica is an international, women-led performing arts production company based in Mallorca, Spain, specialising in physical and visual theatre and the executive production of large-scale international projects. Since its foundation in 2016, the company has built a solid trajectory, combining artistic creation with a strong social and community commitment.

Teen Workshops

There were five online sessions every Wednesday from the 22nd April to the 20th May and five shows from Sunday 31st May to Monday 1st June at VISUAL.

They worked with and learned from an international, women-led performing arts production company, La Mecànica.

The ask was to:

- Actively participate in the creative process of an immersive show through a collaborative and co-creative experience.

- Provide hands-on technical assistance for the performance

- Teach us how they would promote the show via social media to people their age

During the sessions, they explored the pop culture of older generations, how teenagers are perceived by society today, and how they see themselves within their local and global context.

They were invited to add their voice, ideas, and perspectives to adapt parts of the show to reflect their lived experience. This hands-on process offers a unique opportunity to engage with professional artists, learn about immersive performance-making, and help shape the storytelling.

They were asked to interview adults about their teenage years in between sessions.

At the end of the workshops, a selection of participants were invited to volunteer as part of the performance team during Carlow Arts Festival, supporting the show in key interactive moments and enhancing the audience experience from within.

They were also asked to make some social media reels and invite their peers to the show.

"It was an amazing experience, I learnt a lot, connected with new people, and had so much fun...the performance itself was amazing and unique it was so inspiring and insightful and truly is an amazing concept and overall so interesting. I could not have enjoyed it more it was so much fun and cool to be a part of."
