Taranto Aleatorio
María del Mar Suárez / La Chachi & Lola Dolores (Spain)
Dance
Two women in tracksuits eat sunflower seeds in a courtyard. They share a common space, they have a conversation, they sit in silence. Suddenly, the cante (song) and baile (dance) burst forth – transforming this everyday scene into a spectacle.
In Taranto Aleatorio (Random Taranto) the choreographer and dancer María del Mar Suárez (aka La Chachi) and the singer Lola Dolores offer their personal take on the roughness of the flamenco form known as taranto. It is a variety of dance that originated in the Andalusian mining region of Almería and is traditionally accompanied by a simple acapella song – developed from its need to be sung independently.
Combining traditional flamenco with contemporary wit and humour, this free outdoor performance of Taranto Aleatorio will energetically launch audiences into the festival weekend.
"This fabulously radical, feminist flamenco dance-duel-duet knowingly plays with tradition but retains a soul-piercing depth"
